Georg Baselitz

Georg Baselitz is a German painter and sculptor, born on January 23, 1938, in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, Germany. He is known for his unique style of painting, which involves turning his subjects upside down, a technique he developed in the 1960s. Baselitz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in East Berlin, where he was expelled in 1956 for "socio-political immaturity." He then moved to West Berlin, where he continued his studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste.

Baselitz's early works were heavily influenced by the German Expressionist movement, and he often used dark, somber colors in his paintings. In the 1960s, he began experimenting with the inversion technique, which he believed allowed him to see his subjects in a new way. His upside-down paintings often feature distorted figures and bold, gestural brushstrokes.

In addition to his paintings, Baselitz has also created a number of sculptures, many of which are large-scale and made from wood.
