Lithograph

Lithography is a form of pinrtmaking anchored on the principle of oil and water repelling each other. It involves drawing or painting an image onto a smooth, flat surface, traditionally a stone, using a greasy medium like crayon or ink. The surface is then treated with a chemical solution to fix the image and make the non-image areas water-receptive. When inked, the greasy image areas attract the ink while the wet non-image areas repel it. A piece of paper is then pressed onto the surface, transferring the image. Lithography offers artists a wide range of expressive possibilities, from detailed drawings to bold, painterly effects. It became popular in the 19th century as a means of producing high-quality and innovative reproductions of artworks.

Charcoal

Monotype

Monotype is a form of printmaking distinguished by its singular, spontaneous nature. Unlike traditional printmaking methods where multiple copies are produced, monotype results in a single, unique print. The process involves applying ink or paint onto a smooth surface, such as glass or metal, and then transferring the image onto paper through pressure using "light-field," additive ink applied directly, or in the subtractibve, "dark-field," the plate is covered wtih ink and the image is made by removing paint. Artists have considerable freedom in creating monotypes, as they can manipulate the ink or paint directly on the printing surface, allowing for experimentation with color, texture, and mark-making, resulting in diverse and unpredictable outcomes.

Screenprint

Screen printing, also known as silkscreen printing, is a form of prinmaking that involves transferring ink through a mesh screen onto a substrate, typically paper, fabric, or wood. The process begins by creating a stencil on the screen, traditionally made of silk but now often synthetic materials like polyester. Areas not intended for printing are blocked off, leaving open mesh areas for the ink to pass through. Ink is then applied to the screen and pressed through the mesh using a squeegee, transferring the image onto the substrate below. Each color in the design requires a separate screen, allowing for the creaton of complex, multi-color prints. Screen printing is valued for its bold, graphic quality and is widely used in commercial printing, fine art, and textiles.

Lithography

Lithography (from Ancient Greek λίθος, lithos 'stone', and γράφειν, graphein 'to write') is a planographic method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by the German author and actor Alois Senefelder and was initially used mostly for musical scores and maps. Lithography can be used to print text or images onto paper or other suitable material. A lithograph is something printed by lithography, but this term is only used for fine art prints and some other, mostly older, types of printed matter, not for those made by modern commercial lithography.

Engraving

Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard, usually flat surface by cutting grooves into it with a burin. The result may be a decorated object in itself, as when silver, gold, steel, or glass are engraved, or may provide an intaglio printing plate, of copper or another metal, for printing images on paper as prints or illustrations; these images are also called "engravings". Engraving is one of the oldest and most important techniques in printmaking. Wood engraving is a form of relief printing and is not covered in this article.
